FX: mixed closes, uneven volatility

Because the FX bars are dated 2026-10-23, they should be treated as last session data during the weekend. The group does not show a single clean direction. EURUSD closed at 1.1202, down -0.17% on the day and -0.21% over 5 days. Its 20 day change is -1.10%, and it sits at 40% of its 20 day range. The session range reading of 0.69 says activity was below its own recent average.

GBPUSD closed at 1.33633, down -0.30% on the day, but still up 0.21% over 5 days and 0.75% over 20 days. Its position in the 20 day range is 80%, so it remains in the upper part of its recent band even after the daily loss. Range versus the 20 day average was 0.73, also subdued.

USDJPY and USDCHF are the FX pairs where dealing desks should pay more attention to intraday range behaviour. USDJPY closed at 156.819, up 0.18% on the day, but down -0.62% over 5 days and -0.47% over 20 days. Its 20 day range position is 26%, and its range versus average is 1.35. USDCHF closed at 0.82469, up 0.58% on the day and 0.12% over 5 days, but down -1.30% over 20 days. Its range reading was 1.38, with price at 28% of the 20 day range.

AUDUSD and USDCAD are the clearest opposites. AUDUSD closed at 0.70326, up 0.19% on the day, 0.88% over 5 days, and 1.25% over 20 days. It is at 97% of the 20 day range, close to the 20 day high of 0.70384. USDCAD closed at 1.3998, down -0.03% on the day, -0.85% over 5 days, and -1.66% over 20 days. It is at 10% of the 20 day range, with the 20 day low at 1.3966.

Metals: lower closes, near the bottom of range

Metals data is also from the last session, dated 2026-10-23. XAUUSD closed at 3994.77, down -0.71% on the day, -4.54% over 5 days, and -3.88% over 20 days. Its range versus average was 0.98, close to its recent norm, but its position in the 20 day range is only 8%.

XAGUSD remains the weaker metal in this data set. It closed at 53.8492, down -1.32% on the day, -6.12% over 5 days, and -10.83% over 20 days. Its range versus average was 1.02, and it sits at 9% of the 20 day range. For brokers, that combination matters: price is low in its recent band, losses are larger than gold across the listed periods, and the daily range is not unusually quiet.

Crypto: soft tone, but compressed daily ranges

Crypto data is current to 2026-10-24. The direction is consistently negative across the listed crypto instruments, but the range readings are compressed. BTCUSD closed at 80687, down -0.48% on the day, -1.41% over 5 days, and -6.73% over 20 days. Its range versus average is 0.34, and it sits at 14% of the 20 day range.

ETHUSD closed at 2365.48, down -0.79% on the day, -1.65% over 5 days, and -13.24% over 20 days. Its range reading is 0.25, with price at 15% of the 20 day range. SOLUSD closed at 101.72, down -0.96% on the day, -3.09% over 5 days, and -16.33% over 20 days. It is at 6% of its 20 day range. XRPUSD closed at 1.2786, down -1.29% on the day, -1.83% over 5 days, and -15.90% over 20 days, with a 20 day range position of 9%.

Broker desk notes

For FX, the main issue is not broad volatility, but pair selection. USDJPY and USDCHF have elevated range readings against their own 20 day averages, while EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, and USDCAD show quieter range readings between 0.69 and 0.78. Check spread markups and last look outcomes by pair, not just by asset class.

For metals, the risk is directional concentration near the lower end of the 20 day range. XAUUSD at 8% and XAGUSD at 9% can attract dip buying, stop activity, or forced reduction, depending on the client book. Margin settings and maximum exposure limits should be reviewed against actual weekend liquidity from each provider.

For crypto, low range readings do not remove gap and liquidity risk. Weekend execution quality depends heavily on venue depth, symbol settings, and routing. Monitor reject rates, slippage, and hedge fill quality closely.
